I enjoyed this task as i was able to use a current favourite hip-hop artist of mine, Lupe Fiasco.
I used his album title "lasers" and made my own interpretation of this meaning. I used many effects such as blur, inner and outer glow. For my front cover i used a tutorial from YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VynrRk6_l8U) to assist in gaining the effect.
1) Is there enough of a difference between formal and INFORMAL design? Yes the black modern background which is present on both sides of the CD help partner the two designs together. The contrasting bright colours add a sense of liveliness which matches the Hip Hop genre and definitely places this under the informal category.
ReplyDeleteThere is an unorthodox balance in the cover with the black background and the bright vibrant colours both carrying equal dominance within the design, one takes up a majority of the space while the other draws the eye to it with its boldness.
2) Is the concept appropriate for INFORMAL? Yes definitely. Just as a Hip Hop rapper falls into the rebellious informal social group in society, so too does this CD cover so it works well with the genre. The dominant black background is modern and the variation of randomly bright colours in a sharp linear fashion are anything but subtle.
3) Give suggestions as to how improvements can be made & how ideas can be developed further. The front cover works fantastically, a pattern maybe with a low opacity over the back may add an extra touch of detail though. As for the back cover it lacks the bright vibrant colours the front cover has, maybe the sunglasses could have the same sharp and vibrant outer glow of colours present on the front cover. The text maybe also would be more suiting if it was white, matching the san serif font on the front cover.
question 4)
rate the overall aesthetic and explain why ?
strength > The main font on the cover has an amazing design.
weaknesses > The front cover works very well so maybe the back cover needs to reflect it a little more.
opportunities > The blue font on the back cover may suit the front one more if it was white and Fiasco's glasses where rainbow around the edges instead of purple.
threats > Once again maybe some more partnership between the back and front cover in relation to the text and Fiasco's purple glasses could be seen as a threat.
